The History of Humble Ranch

Humble Ranch has deep roots in the Yampa Valley. Originally homesteaded in 1898 by William Milner, the land passed through five families over the next 57 years. In 1967, Edwin Grant purchased the 4,000-acre property and founded Yampa Valley Land & Cattle.

By 1998, development pressures threatened the working ranch. To help preserve its heritage, Ed and Cheri Trousil partnered with the Colorado Department of Wildlife, Colorado State Parks, and the City of Steamboat Springs to protect 1,800 acres of the original ranch. This portion of the property is permanently protected from development under a land conservation agreement held by The Cattleman’s Land Trust, ensuring this historic property remains a vital part of the Steamboat landscape for generations to come.

In 1999, the Trousil family established Humble Ranch on this preserved land. Just a year later, in 2000, the Humble Ranch Education & Therapy Center was founded—bringing therapeutic riding programs for individuals living with physical and cognitive limitations in the community.

Today, the Trousils still call Humble Ranch home, and Humble Ranch Education & Center continues to offer meaningful seasonal programming for individuals and families throughout the region.

The Heart of Humble Ranch

For over 20 years, the ranch has been home to Humble Ranch Education & Therapy Center, a 501©3 nonprofit dedicated to enriching lives through equine-assisted therapies. Serving individuals across the Yampa Valley, the program creates meaningful, hands-on connections between people and horses, supporting emotional growth, physical development, and overall well-being in a truly unique and restorative setting.

A Thoughtful Ranch Retreat

Humble Ranch offers a rare balance of privacy, proximity, and place. Thoughtfully restored accommodations and wide-open land come together to create a stay that feels both intentional & comfortable.
